Stanford Online Courses

Stanford Engineering

Recently, Stanford University started free online courses Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The experiment proved to be successful and the second round of courses, 9 on Computer Science and 2 on Enterpreneurship, will be offered January through March 2012.

The courses will mostly be given by Stanford professors, most of whom are recognized experts in their fields and authors of books.

The courses are offered in two tracks: Basic and Advanced. In the Basic Track, you will listen to lectures and do weekly homework assignments. Also, no one will demand anything from you. The Advanced Track will involve laboratory works, which will be checked by teachers. The works will be graded, they have to be handed in on time, and late admissions will be assessed a penalty. At the end of the course, in the Advanced Track, you will receive a letter with results from your teacher. There are no certificates, all you get is the knowledge you manage to pick up during the course.

According to comments, each course will take at least several hours a week depending on your choice of track. You can change tracks during the course, but you have to remember about penalties.
